BA3 Research into Texture Studies

http://www.kelseym.com/

I understood mostly the tasks at hand yet needed to research a little into texture and lighting studies to see what was being asked of me.

A few images and examples have helped me see what I will need to produce and I will potentially attempt to do 3D studies as well as 2D in materials and textures.

BA3 Research into Architecture 6

It has been a while since my last post but a lot of progress has been made since then. I have two more models and have started on a far more researched and ground study which I hope to use as the final study of my soft submission textured and all.

For this post though I will showcase my more recent studies.

These were the two reference images used for each study.
One focused on this column/corner piece while the other looked into an arch formed door.

The first I created since the Window as the column and focused less on being faithful to the reference and more on experimenting with geometry in maya and learning new ways to merge meshes, combine primitives and create something more complex from humble beginnings.

I began initially with two primitves, a cylinder, and a cube. The were extruded up. After applying a triple division to the cube i cut a quarter out of the cyclinder and merged its verts to the cube. I repeated this 3 more times, added some edge loops, extruded some faces and resulted in the image above.

Extruding some more faces and creating edge loops and merging verts allowed the final product to be the as in the image below.

Doing some research online and with the knowledge given to me through a friend I was able to also learn rendering out a pleasing image using mental ray to achieve a quality image such as above and below.

The renders came out nicely and allowed me to showcase the lighting and shadows that would affect such a structure and also allow me to use this process to create appealing images for a more impressive piece.

Potentially for use for a final piece we may produce to create a showcase image compiliation

Using the processes I had learnt through this study I was able to also create a thick door piece.

The methods of achieving its design were very similar to that of the column starting out with basic primitives, extruding faces and applying addition edge loops to forge the grounds of your design to then warp and mold to get the intended appearance.

Thoughts:

Feeling far more confident with my skills in Maya I believe I am able to move onto something far more complex.

I have not been 100% faithful to the source images with these sculpts potentially through the lack of reference images and plan to work on gathering a lot of reference for the next piece.

I want to pick something far more detailed yet not in it's shape but in it's character. In one of my early posts I spoke about how weathering, and damage really made a piece of architecture far more interesting and I want to try and created that in 3D.

I will try and search for a piece around Norwich that I am able to get plenty of images from and also matches the criteria I have set out.

The aim is to find something that looks aged, potentially damaged, layered with nature or grime. This would allow me to make a more organic structure than what I have previously created and give me an oppurtunity to delve into texturing to achieve this appearance.
